STN on the Web bietet die STN-Kommandosprache (vormals Messenger) an, um auf alle STN-Datenbanken zuzugreifen. Der Nutzer wird von sog. "Assistenten" durch weite Bereiche seiner oftmals komplizierten Suchen geführt. Hervorzuheben beim Suchsystem sind die hierarchischen Expand- und Suchfunktionen, die Biosequenzsuche, die Struktursuche sowie die informetrischen Funktionen.
